Description
The state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico has an extraordinary biodiversity, even more than some entire countries in Central America (Binford, 1989; Ramamoorthy et al., 1993). The state contains the largest number of species of mammals, with 192 species (Alfaro et al., 2005); among them are 84 species of bats (Garcia-Garcia et al., 2007). The greatest number of species in Oaxaca are in tropical habitats, mostly in the region of Los Chimalapas (Salas Morales et al., 2001), which is comprised of the municipalities of Santa Maria Chimalapa and San Miguel Chimalapa. The area is characterized by a series of mountain ranges and has elevations of 100-2,700 m (Salas Morales et al., 2001). Along with Chajul (Chiapas) and Calakmul (Campeche), the area is considered among the most pristine tropical regions in Mexico (Binford, 1989; Salas Morales et al., 2001) and a high priority for conservation (Peterson et al., 2003). However, due to its significant amount of natural resources, the area also has been an arena of serious social conflicts for a long time, mainly about land tenure. These conflicts have sharply limited biological studies (Goodwin, 1969; Rowley, 1984; Binford, 1989; Russell, 1996; Peterson et al., 2003) and the area remains little explored. During July-December 2008, we collected small mammals in Santa Maria Chimalapa. Among species of bats recorded, two species are new to the state and another is recorded only for the second time. Specimens were captured using mistnets in evergreen tropical forests, and were deposited in the Coleccion de Referencia de Mamiferos del Laboratorio de Ecologia Animal del Centro Interdisciplinario de Investigation para el Desarrollo Integral Regional, Unidad Oaxaca del Instituto Politeecnico National de Mexico (ECOAN-MAM).
